How Solana priority fees work and why they matter for memecoin trades

Solana has a two-part fee structure. The base fee is fixed: 5000 lamports per signature. That is the minimum cost to have a transaction processed at all. The second part is optional but increasingly essential: a priority fee, expressed as a compute unit price.

Priority fees are a bid. You pay extra per compute unit your transaction needs, and validators order transactions by how much they pay. Higher priority fee means earlier execution. During memecoin mania, that ordering determines whether you get the token or watch the price move without you.

Why memecoin trades amplify the problem

A memecoin launch attracts hundreds of buyers in the same seconds. Snipers run automated scripts that submit transactions the moment liquidity appears. Your manual trade, even if you click instantly, competes with those scripts.

The difference is often the priority fee. A sniper might set a priority fee of 0.01 SOL or more, while a casual trader using default settings might pay 0.001 SOL. The sniper's transaction lands first. By the time yours executes, the price has already moved.

This is why "Network congestion, priority fee too low" appears. It is not really about network congestion in the usual sense. It means validators have better-paying transactions to process first, and yours gets dropped or stuck.

Setting priority fees in common tools

Phantom wallet allows manual priority fee adjustment. Under settings, you can set both a priority fee in SOL and a compute unit limit. The default is conservative. For memecoin trades during a hot launch, you will likely need to raise it. Phantom also has an "auto" mode that estimates the current market rate. That estimate can lag behind the spike in demand during the first seconds of a launch.

Photon gives you more granular control. It shows current priority fee market data and lets you set a priority fee multiplier. A multiplier of 5x or 10x on the base fee is common for memecoin trades. Photon also includes a "fast" preset that aims for inclusion within the next block.

BullX offers similar options. It has a priority fee slider and displays the current fee market. BullX also integrates Jito bundles, which is a separate mechanism.

Priority fees and Jito tips

Jito is a Solana validator client that processes bundles - ordered sequences of transactions. To get your transaction into a Jito bundle, you pay a tip. That tip is separate from the priority fee.

The relationship matters because Jito bundles bypass the normal mempool. For memecoin trades, bundle inclusion can mean the difference between a successful buy and a failed transaction.

Priority fees still apply within a bundle. The Jito tip buys you bundle inclusion; the priority fee determines your position within the bundle. High priority fee inside a Jito bundle means you land ahead of other trades in the same block.

Practical considerations

Manual priority fees work best when you know the current market. During a quiet period, default settings are fine. During a memecoin launch with thousands of competing transactions, you will likely need to raise the priority fee significantly.

Auto priority fees can fail at the worst moment. The algorithm estimates based on recent blocks. A sudden spike in demand, like a new memecoin going live, is not captured in the estimate until after the spike. By then, the opportunity is gone.

There is no universal number. The right priority fee depends on how many others are bidding for the same block space. Observing recent transactions on the token you want to buy can give you a sense, but that takes time, and memecoin launches do not wait.

What this means for your trades

You are not just paying to have your transaction processed. You are bidding against everyone else who wants the same token at the same moment. The priority fee is your bid.

Set it too low and your transaction gets dropped or delayed until the price moves against you. Set it too high and you overpay for a trade that might still fail for other reasons. There is no perfect setting, only tradeoffs.

Understanding the fee model does not guarantee success. It does let you make an informed choice about how much you are willing to pay for speed. In memecoin trading, that choice often determines whether you get in at all.
